 Head Lice Policy

Reviewed: 18 March 2013

St Francis Xavier will follow the guidelines given in the Brisbane Catholic Education OHS Fact Sheet Head Lice in Schools. In keeping with this document, the procedure for children seen to have head lice and/or complaining about the presence of head lice, will be as follows:

  1. If a child is seen to have headlice, his/her parent will be contacted and the child taken home for treatment. The child will be permitted to return to school once treatment has been effected.

  2. All of the children from the affected class will take home the Alert Notice (Brisbane Catholic Education OHS Alert Notice).  This notice is to be returned, filled out in its entirety the next day.

  3. In the case of all other children in the class, regardless of whether treatment has commenced or not, the slip is seen as documentary evidence that treatment has commenced and therefore negating to return the slip will be seen as having not commenced treatment. The parent will then be informed that a reminder slip along with another copy of the Alert notice will be sent home that afternoon. They are informed that the next day:

  • If treatment has begun and the child has brought a slip he/she will return to class.

  • If treatment does not occur the child will be sent home. (He/she may return that day if treatment has been carried out.)

  • No returned form means that treatment has not been carried out. The child will be sent home. (He/she may return that day if treatment has been carried out.)
