Review of the Australian Curriculumhttp://www.stfrancisxavier.qld.edu.au/news/Pages/Review-of-the-Australian-Curriculum.aspxReview of the Australian Curriculum

According to the Australian Government's StudentsFirst website all Australian students deserve access to a world-class curriculum that encourages diversity and which allows schools flexibility over how it is taught.

The Australian Government established the Review of the Australian Curriculum in January 2014. The review evaluated the robustness, independence and balance of the process and development of the Australian Curriculum. It also sought to understand whether the Australian Curriculum is delivering what students need, parents expect and the nation requires in an increasingly competitive world.

The Review of the Australian Curriculum was informed by consultation and research to ensure that a broad range of views on the curriculum were heard. These included stakeholder consultations, international and national research evidence and evaluation of Australian Curriculum learning area documentation by subject matter specialists. Members of the public also had a chance to have their say through an online submission process running from 28 February to 14 March 2014. Submissions are now available to read online.

The Review of the Australian Curriculum Final Report was released in October 2014.

In their report, the reviewers have highlighted a number of key areas they feel should be addressed to strengthen the Australian Curriculum.

Review of the Australian Curriculum Final Report

The Review’s Final Report and its recommendations will now be considered by all Australian education ministers.

This additional funding will assist Catholic schools to further support teachers to develop their skills and consider new ways to improve teacher quality and performance. The Catholic sector commends the State Government for allowing the flexibility to tailor reforms to the individual needs and circumstances of our schools. This planning forum will be an important step for our schools in the process of developing their program implementation plans.” QCEC Executive Director Mike Byrne said.

The forum combined expert presentations by representatives of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), Queensland Education Leadership Institute (QELi) and the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), along with opportunities for discussion and sharing of ideas.

Catholic school authorities will develop a three year (2015-2017) program overview plan by mid-November with final implementation plans, including timelines for key professional development activities and events, and expected outcomes, by mid-February 2015. The Catholic sector will report annually in September of each year as part of Queensland Government reporting requirements.

Click here to read the QCEC document - A response to the Queensland Government’s Great teachers = Great results program tailored to the needs and circumstances of Catholic schooling.

There are 296 Catholic schools in Queensland educating almost 1 in 5 Queensland students and employing more than 10,000 teaching staff.
