A handcrafted timber cross will soon welcome families at the entrance of St Francis Xavier Primary School, Goodna, a visible expression of the school's 2026 theme, “Created with Purpose," and the community's focus on compassion, respect and hospitality.
Designed and built by 77-year-old craftsman Granton Waverley Smith, the cross stands 1800mm high and 1200mm wide, weighing between 30 and 40 kilograms. Using a CAD program, Mr Smith designed the cross before machining it from solid Quella New Guinea hardwood on the 3D CNC machine he built more than 15 years ago. The timber was carefully treated with his own protective blend of linseed oil and kerosene, ensuring the cross will endure for many years.
“I have made a lot of things for the community. I enjoy my community service," Mr Smith said.
For the school community, the cross is more than a structure; it is a visible sign of faith and belonging.
Nick Tyler, Assistant Principal Religious Education, said the cross reflects the school's identity as a Catholic community grounded in faith and action.
“The cross was created with purpose as both a visual reminder and experiential opportunity to stop, pause and reflect on what sets us apart as a Catholic community," he said.
He said the initiative connects strongly to the Mercy charism of hospitality creating a space where every person feels welcomed, valued and respected.
The project aligns with the message of Brisbane Catholic Education's Formation and Engagement Executive Sharon O'Keefe, who spoke in a recent edition of the "Teach Challenge Transform" podcast series, and encouraged Catholic school communities to nourish their faith so that their hands may act out the work of their hearts.
In the spirit of St Francis Xavier and Catherine McAuley, the cross stands as a daily reminder that Catholic education forms hearts as well as minds.
